Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:  The competency restoration educator will be responsible for outpatient competency restoration for 30-45 individuals. The educator will be facilitating restoration in both individual and group settings. This position will be working with individuals who have been evaluated as “ITP” or incompetent to proceed and the goal will be to restore these individuals to legal competency so that they may resolve their pending court case.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Receive referrals from The Office of Behavioral Health Strategies (OBHS) to identify individuals in need of outpatient restoration services.
  • Coordinate with OBHS and the MHCD BRIDGES liaisons to ensure low barrier, timely connection to restoration services.
  • Conduct outpatient competency restoration in both individual and group settings.
  • Manage a restoration caseload of 30-45 individuals.
  • Assist individuals in building knowledge and familiarity around the court process, their rights in court and the details around their case.
  • Responsible for timely documentation for all services provided.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION: 

Contractors should hold a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in a mental health related field, criminal justice related field or educational field.

EXPERIENCE: 

A minimum of two years’ experience working with adults and/or juveniles with mental health needs, and/or intellectual deficits.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge of methods of competency restoration education. 
  • Knowledge of community resources. 
  • Ability to assess crisis situations and intervene appropriately. 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed care principles/practices. 
  • Knowledge of various teaching modalities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   None  

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:  Computers, calculators, fax machines, copiers, telephone and a variety of other office/clerical equipment.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching.  May require lifting up to 50 pounds.   Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, the telephone and other office and/or clinical equipment.
