Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Director of Innovation is tasked with running the Innovation Lab at the Mental Health Center of Denver.

 

 The Innovation Lab is a new team inside Mental Health Center of Denver’s Information Systems department. The Innovation Lab vets, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of digital health partners to transform behavioral health care by addressing issues of access, engagement, and treatment efficacy. Its goal is to create extraordinary experiences that improve well-being for ALL lives in Denver. The Innovation Lab will leverage technology to expand services and improve current practices. The Innovation Lab uses human centered design and agile project management to ensure that innovations deliver value and meet the needs of stakeholders: Mental Health Center of Denver staff, the people we serve, and the greater Denver community. The Director shall work to ensure sustainability of the Innovation Lab efforts within three years, either through sustainable revenue streams or through meeting other Mental Health Center of Denver strategic goals.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage the staff of the Innovation Lab.
  • Operationalize the organization’s strategic vision for the Innovation Lab.
  • Find prospective digital health partners who can help Mental Health Center of Denver realize its vision.
  • With the CIO, negotiate partnerships that will allow Mental Health Center of Denver meet its clinical and operational objectives in a sustainable manner.
  • Use human centered design (HCD) principles to find solutions people want.
  • Use agile project management in alignment with current Information Systems practice, including documentation of work in the project management system.
  • Lead the Innovation Lab as a scrum team, where cross-functional team members work together to accomplish collaborative project goals.
  • Conduct retrospectives to improve team velocity by removing impediments.
  • Serve as project director for any grants the Innovation Lab receives.
  • Direct the Innovation Lab to meet any “learning collaborative” requirements that the Mental Health Center of Denver enters into.
  • Provide monthly written updates to the CIO of milestones achieved and their value to the organization.
  • Coordinate Innovation Lab efforts with the Directors of Information Technology, Enterprise Applications, and Information Services to ensure that technology innovations are aligned with IT infrastructure and strategy, and that solutions are integrated with our existing systems.
  • Work with Program Evaluators from the Information Services team to ensure that each innovation project has an evaluation designed before work starts on the project, and that the evaluation is completed.
  • Coordinate the implementation of innovations with clinical operations staff.
  • When an innovation pilot’s evaluation suggests that the innovation is successful, work to scale the pilot and integrate the innovation into standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure that Mental Health Center of Denver meets all contractual requirements with partners, payers, etc., for the Innovation Lab.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree in a field related to either health care, social sciences, technology, or design. Master’s degree preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:  5+ years in healthcare, preferably behavioral health. 3+ years of experience

managing staff.

 

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from all walks of life
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Agile project management; design thinking; business technology

 

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   Staff of the Innovation Lab

 

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:  Computers, calculators, fax machines, copiers, telephone and a variety of other office/clerical equipment.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching.  May require lifting up to 50 pounds.   Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, the telephone and other office and/or clinical equipment. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  May require occasional evening or weekend hours; occasional travel to vet partners and speak at professional conferences.
