Position Summary: As the national leader in redefining how mental health care is addressed in a community, the Mental Health Center of Denver seeks an experienced fundraising professional who will flourish in a work environment where strengths and well-being are celebrated. Collaborating with diverse staff from throughout the organization and our community partners, the Director of Philanthropy will advance the Mental Health Center of Denver’s culture of philanthropy by guiding and implementing a strategic fundraising program including: annual giving, major gifts, corporate gifts, and planned giving. The Director of Philanthropy works closely with the Vice President of Development, the Chief Executive Officer, Executive leadership and Board members to identify, cultivate and provide stewardship for major donors.  This individual will diversify support for the Mental Health Center of Denver through engagement of Denver’s diverse philanthropic communities.

Essential Job Functions:

Donor Relations

  • Implement strategies to identify, cultivate, sustain and increase individual multi-year donors and corporate giving through innovative fundraising approaches. Design and implement next-generation donor strategy to include culturally proficient donor engagement that promotes community investment in the mission of the Mental Health Center of Denver.

Program/Internal Relations

  • Provide leadership that advances a culture of philanthropy across the organization. Provide strategic consultation to the Board of Directors and executive leadership to promote fundraising efforts and corporate sponsorships. Advance a workplace giving campaign. Create opportunities for program staff to intersect with donors. Promote fundraising/marketing efforts.

Areas of Giving

  • Ensure the vitality of organization’s annual giving initiatives. Promote fundraising efforts through social media. Work with the Vice President of Development and program leadership to cultivate and solicit major gifts. Design and implement capital and other fundraising campaigns. Implement and evaluate planned giving program. Jointly plan strategic special events to introduce and cultivate diverse donors.

Job Requirements:

Education:       Minimum BA / BS in Non-Profit Management, Marketing, Communications, Business, or Public Administration or related degree. Training at Benevon / Raising More Money 101 level or higher preferred. Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) preferred.

Experience:     Minimum of 5 years as senior level fundraiser and/or non-profit management. Experience with health-related organizations or human services organizations preferred.

Skills:  

  • Demonstrated knowledge of professional ethics of fundraising
  • Knowledge of public policy issues affecting healthcare
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Public speaking, non-profit communication management experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficient use of information management software including donor management software, MS Excel, e-Tapestry
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and communicate effectively (oral and written) and develop relationships with people from all walks of life from both inside and outside the organization
  • Excellent project management skills; including high level of creative and strategic thinking; and the ability to motivate others
  • Ability to give, receive, and analyze information; formulate work plans, prepare written materials, articulate goals and action plans.
  • Demonstrated skill in use of state-of-the-art technologies for donor engagement and cultivation

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:    Development Officer for Philanthropy, volunteers.  Work with consultants/ independent contractors.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:  Computers, calculators, fax machines, scanners, copiers, telephone and a variety of other office/clerical equipment.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 50 pounds.   Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, the telephone and other office equipment.

Typical Mental Demands: Ability to give, receive and analyze information, formulate work plans, prepare written materials and articulate goals and action plans. Must understand people from all walks of life and be able to communicate effectively with them.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Requires occasional evening, weekend, or on-call hours.
